Pretty Standard is a Sydney-based design studio exploring how traditional textile practices can be applied within contemporary workwear. The studio focuses on durable materials such as denim, canvas and heavy cotton, using them as a foundation to experiment with craft techniques, garment construction and long-term wear.
A core part of the practice involves researching and working alongside artisans and small studios across Asia, particularly in China and Japan, to better understand processes such as natural dyeing, traditional weaving and repair. Rather than simply referencing these techniques aesthetically, the goal is to document, test and reinterpret them so they can exist meaningfully within modern garment production.
Alongside product development, Pretty Standard is building a structured archive documenting fabrics, techniques, experiments, collaborators and finished garments. This archive acts as both a design tool and an educational resource, helping preserve knowledge that often sits outside mainstream fashion systems.
The studio is also exploring the use of advanced finishing technologies through partnerships with organisations such as Jeanologia. By combining traditional craft knowledge with modern wash and finishing systems, the aim is to develop garments that evolve over time while reducing environmental impact.
