Dr Alison Gwilt is an author, researcher and Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Her work examines the innovative design methods and approaches that enable the fashion and textiles community, from educators, to producers, and consumers, to adopt more sustainable and ethical practices. Alison is a consultant/advisor to industry, an active researcher and workshop facilitator.

UNSW Integrated Design, based in the School of Art & Design, unites studio learning, research and industry to address real problems with creative, sustainable outcomes. Fashion and Textiles sits within this area, enabling exploration of fashion design, materials, construction and systems thinking alongside circular economy practice.

At undergraduate level, students build skills from concept to prototype, including patternmaking, knit and stretch, textiles, digital workflows and 3D visualisation. Multidisciplinary studios mirror professional settings, so students collaborate across design fields and apply critical thinking to live briefs, work-integrated learning and potential internships in Australia and overseas.

Across all levels, Integrated Design champions environmentally and socially responsible practice. Graduates emerge with a future-focused portfolio and the confidence to contribute to Australia’s fashion and textiles sector, backed by UNSW’s strong partnerships and commitment to societal impact.
